9. SUMMERTIME – DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince

Grabbing the towels, a water hose, and a bucket to wash the car in sweltering heat seems less of a chore if you’re being serenaded by this Grammy award winning ode to summer. Performed by the hip hop duo of DJ Jazzy Jeff And The Fresh Prince, this is a light airy groove which makes you want to grab a pal and go shoot some baskets under a bright blue sky. And afterward, firing up the grill for burgers and dogs.

Saturday in the park / I think it was the fourth of July. Whatever day it was, Saturday In The Park shot all the way up to number three on the Billboard charts of 1972 and sold over a million copies in the U.S alone. Band member Robert Lamm paid a visit to Central Park in New York City where he observed singers, musicians, and jugglers performing. Interesting tidbit: Lamm wrote of his visit, which occurred July 4, 1971, which was a Sunday.

7. SUMMER NIGHTS – John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John

In 1978 movie goers flocked to theaters to see the big screen adaptation of the hit musical Grease, starring John Travolta as Danny Zuko and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson. The hit movie produced several hits and Summer Nights roared to the top of the charts in the UK, making it to number three in the U.S. Just hearing it again puts you back in the old convertible at a drive-in movie on a hot summer Friday night.

Some songs describe the perfect summer day. None do it better than Under The Boardwalk, the big hit from 1964. The song references the beach, the hot sun, the food, and of course, the beach blanket where two young lovers rendezvous under the boardwalk. Under The Boardwalk almost wasn’t. The night before The Drifters were to record the hit, lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose. Former lead singer Johnny Moore came in and quickly saved the day.

5. SUMMER OF ’69 – Bryan Adams

This coming of age ode was released in 1985 and Canadian rocker Bryan Adams takes a fond look back at the summer where he picked up a six string guitar that he played until his fingers bled, and started a band that never realized success. Adam’s relationship with the girl he met at a drive in theater also failed, as he looks back, asking what went wrong. Well nothing went wrong in 1985 as Summer Of ’69 became a worldwide hit. This is one amongst the Top 10 Best Summer Songs of All Time till 2017.

4. SCHOOL’S OUT – Alice Cooper

Nothing signals the start of summer quite like the final day of school. Students have cleaned out their desks and sit agonizing at the slow clock. But finally, the bell rings for the last time, and summer can finally begin. As Alice sang: No more pencils, no more books / no more teachers’ dirty looks. Cooper’s first big hit reached number seven on the Billboard charts in 1971, and remains an anthem for students ready to get their summer started.

3. BOYS OF SUMMER – Don Henley

The Eagles vocalist sings a song about a young man entering into middle age while looking, often fondly, back at scenes from more youthful days. I don’t understand / what happened to our love / But babe, I’m gonna to get you back / I’m gonna show you what I’m made of. The song evokes images of Henley driving along a beachfront road with the top down on a hot summer’s night. A melancholy red sunset glowing just ahead of him. Boys Of Summer drips with hot sentiment, and places you in the dog days of a summer where past memories are revisited and hope springs for the future.

2. SUMMERTIME BLUES – Eddie Cochran

In 1994 country music superstar, Alan Jackson did what Eddie Cochran could not do in 1958; ride this classic summer tune all the way to the top of the charts. Jackson’s version included some down-by-the-riverbank country stylings but we prefer Cochran’s original version. It’s about a young man’s plans for summer being foiled by his boss, his parents, and any other obstacle life throws in his way. Cochran lamented having to work to earn a dollar, preferring to just go enjoy his summer. He even took his complaint to his congressman who dismissed him as being too young to vote. Sorry about your blues, Eddie, but this classic summer song is perfect for our list!

1. CALIFORNIA GIRLS – The Beach Boys

Let’s face it: if there were such a thing as a “summer group,” it would be The Beach Boys, who could easily fit nine more of their hits into our “Best Of” summer song list. Just saying their name conjures all sorts of summer images: beaches, surfers, hot girls in bikinis, and the hot rods they ride in with their surfer boyfriends. The Beach Boys are the ultimate band of the eternal summer. When you listen to California Girls you’re instantly transported to a fourth of July party under a hot sun on the beach where surfers surf, girls sunbathe, and every radio present blares a Beach Boys tune.
