Pop punk is an evolution of the punk rock scene that really rose to prominence during the 70’s and 80’s all across the world. Pop punk was a little easier for the general public to get behind, as it drove lyrics farther away from anarchy and political opinions and more into the wheelhouse of heartbreak and partying. While there have been all kinds of self-proclaimed pop punk banks coming and going over the past couple decades, there are a handful that still have a considerable following and tracks that have easily placed themselves on this list of the Top 10 Pop Punk Songs of All Time.
Since there are so many pop punk bands with memorable singles, there are 3 honorable mentions for songs that almost made the cut but fell just short. “Dear Maria, Count Me In” from All Time Low, “My Own Worst Enemy” by Lit, and “Welcome To My Life” by Simple Plan.
List of Top 10 Best Pop Punk Songs of All Time until in 2017
10. “The Anthem” – Good Charlotte
Good Charlotte burst onto the pop punk scene after major successes with tracks on their debut album. By the time their sophomore release The Young and the Hopeless came out, the group were superstars. This album would feature many hit singles for the twin brothers that led this band, but none seemed quite as resonant as “The Anthem”. This song focused heavily on non-conformity, being yourself and following your dreams. They attribute their successes as a band to not listening to their own parents who said they needed to give up and get real jobs.
9. “Fat Lip” – Sum 41
While later releases would sky rocket the group to being more than just the power chord heavy party rockers, Sum 41 can attribute having those chances at all to the success of their first single “Fat Lip”. This song served as an anthem for good times and having fun, but also as a unique look at the sometimes twisted views of the track’s writers.
8. “My Friends Over You” – New Found Glory
This is another one of the pop punk giants that found their stride in the late 90’s and early 2000’s. New Found Glory would have numerous hit singles, but none reached quite the status as this track. The song features a love lorn singer stating once and for all that he’s fed up with the way things have been and he doesn’t want the relationship to get fixed up this time. From now on, it’s his friends over her.
7. “Way Away” – Yellowcard
The debut release from Yellowcard, Ocean Avenue, would be ripe with memorable songs about growing up and finding someone to spend the rest of your life with. The song that best personifies both the album and the style of the band (pop punk with violin accompaniment), was the track “Way Away”. This is a song that screams of the confusions of being a teenager or young adult and has a driving melody that has you wanting to hit repeat when it’s over.
6. “Best of Me” – The Starting Line
While the band has quite a larger cult following, they never saw the success that some of the later listed bands on this list would obtain. That being said, their bar none most popular song since the bands creation has been “Best of Me”. This song has been recorded both in a full band style for its first release, and then stripped down to acoustics for a later specialty release. The song is a call to all lovers that have had problems and struggles, but have gotten through them and found themselves better for the trouble now.
5. “The Kids Aren’t Alright” – The Offspring
While the band would have many hit #1 singles in the rock genre, they have found their way onto the pop punk greatness list through their insistent return to punk rock roots present on every album that they release. Perhaps one of the most popular of this style of songs, which inevitably took them from the campy lyrics and delved into deeper and more meaningful subject matter, “The Kids Aren’t Alright”. This is one amongst the Top 10 Best Pop Punk Songs of All Time until 2017.
4. “Sugar, We’re Goin Down” – Fall Out Boy
Reaching mild success with their debut release, Fall Out Boy found their stride most significantly following the release of their sophomore effort From Under The Cork Tree. The biggest single from this album, which reached the biggest heights for the band at this time chart wise, as well as made them a household name with pop punk fans of all ages was “Sugar, We’re Goin Down”.
3 “Boys of Summer” – The Ataris
Deemed one of the single greatest pop punk covers of all time, the Ataris saw a lot of record sales for their album So Long, Astoria primarily off of the unexpected success of their version of “Boys of Summer”. While the song stays true to its original lyrics, barring a Black Flag reference in lieu of the ‘Dead Head sticker on a Cadillac”, it is the commitment to a true pop punk version of this classic rock hit that has given The Ataris presence on this Top 10 list.
2 “Basket Case” – Green Day
Easily considered one of the two biggest pop punk bands of all time, Green Day hit the ground running and have not let fans down since the explosion of sound audiences enjoyed with the album Dookie. One of the hit singles off of this iconic pop punk album was “Basket Case” which details the internal struggles that the singer has with himself.
1. “Dammit” – Blink 182
Contending for the other slot at the top of the greatest pop punk bands of all time, and also a band that has shown lasting power throughout the decades is Blink 182. The band saw moderate successes before the release of Dude Ranch. This album would feature several songs the band still plays to this day, including the song that is sitting as the number one pop punk song of all time on this list, “Dammit.” It would be the successes of this song and the tracks that would be released later from this band that would inspire the releases from nearly every other band on this list, apart from Green Day.
